SPINS comes with a variety of case files which (should) run without any problems. Below is a list of currently available cases with a description of their purpose.
derivatives
Computes secondary variables (vorticity, enstrophy, dissipation) and derivatives of flow variables (velocity, density, temperature, etc). See SPINS derivatives for more information
NOTE: If the v-velocity exists (flow is 3 dimensional, or periodic in the span-wise direction of a 2 dimensional case) then the option v_exist=true
must be set.
dipole
Crashing of a dipole into a wall. See the theses by C. Subich and K. Rowe and the reference therein.
gravity_current
The simplest of cases. Creation of a bottom gravity current originating from the collapse of a region of high density fluid.
kh_billow
Formation of Kelvin-Helmholtz billows by shear in a stratified pseudo-two layer fluid.
map_iwave
Formation of internal waves from tidal forcing of a stratified fluid over a ridge. See the thesis by C. Subich.
mode1_mode2
Formation of a mode-1 and/or mode-2 ISW in a closed tank. Each wave can be turned on or off. Made to be as close to laboratory experiments as possible.
mode2_ISW
Like mode1_mode2 but with only the mode-2 ISW. Double pycnocline is also an option. See Deepwell et al. (2016) and Deepwell et al. (2017).
wave_reader
Starting simulations from data originating elsewhere. This data might be created in Matlab (see Matlab-to-SPINS grid ordering) or to be extending a 2D simulation to 3D.
nleos (Under construction)
Choosing a different equation of state. Choices include a simple linear 2 constituent (heat/salt) equation of state, simple quadratic equation of state (for freshwater near the temperature of maximum density), and a full nonlinear equation of state.
